In 1980 the EC Coal Directorate published the handbook "Firedamp Drainage". In this volume, the field of firedamp drainage is completely described in all its aspects incl. principles of gas storage and release, ventilation design, drainage techniques, planning and design of the drainage network and pumping stations, monitoring, and gas utilization. Now the World Coal Institute, the UN Economic Commission for Europe and the Methane to Markets Partnership are preparing new a "Guidance for Effective Methane Drainage and Use at Coal Mines" with the aim of avoiding disasters due to firedamp. With its detailed technical content, "Firedamp Drainage" will be an important companion to this document; therefore, the handbook is being reprinted so that it remains available as an important resource.
